Abstract
The renewed interest in spectator sports and the desire to avoid disruptions has created a need for covered stadiums. Translucent roof systems make for good playing conditions and retain part of the outdoor character. In some cases retractable roofs are wanted. For the large spans required, lightweight structural systems are best suited. The paper describes a number of such systems designed by the writer, including tent forms, cable and saddle domes, arch supported and retractable structures.
