Abstract
Tensegrity structures have been known for a long time but their application has been very limited, in spite of the vast architectural and engineering potential. The lack of interest shown by architects and builders is attributed to technical problems which make large-scale applications impractical.

The paper presents a preliminary conceptual, analytical and experimental investigation of a novel type of tensegrity structure, in which bars are confined between two layers of cables. This arrangement solves problems of bar congestion and excessive bar lengths associated with previous concepts and, in addition, makes possible new designs and applications. The investigation demonstrates the feasibility of the new concept while pointing out potential problems and the need for further research.
