Abstract
The roofing of the hangar requires four bays of a modular structure simply supported on a 30x30 m column center lines, natural illumination, an overhead crane capable of lifting up to 100 kN and use of a concrete for fire resistance and reduced maintenance. The solution was found in the design of cylindrical shells with built-in and diaphragms which constitute sections of an edge beam. The shells were prestressed and plant precast: after their shipment to the construction site and proper alignment, the joints between adjacent units were injected and strands pulled through the ducts laid in the diaphragms. After positioning of the strands a whole roof unit, spanning 30x30m, was lifted up to the top of the columns by means of hydraulic jacks acting on suspension cables; at the end of the lifting the cables were stressed and became the final supporting system. The design took into account the possibility of alternative assembly positions for the shells in order to obtain different shapes of the roof which, for this reason, can be shaped either for north-light shed, or for wing or barrel vault (as in the illustrated case).
