Abstract
An expert system is a computer program designed to simulate a consultation between an expert of a particular field and the non-expert. Typically, the non-expert is the end user and the computer model the expert.

The technique which is at its early stages of development, has successfully demonstrated the possibility of carrying out a realistic consultation between the user and the expert for selecting plant for high rise construction.

The standard achieved by the system as developed so far falls short of some of our earlier expectations and problems relating to uncertainty remain for further investigation. This paper describes the process of knowledge acquisition and its representation in a computer model in a form suitable to aid plant selection for the construction planning process.
