Abstract
Nine expert system shell programs have been evaluated recently on a SERC funded research grant. A full report is available but this paper reports on some of the lessons learned from the study. Knowledge representation is discussed and problems identified, particularly in handling numeric variables and in deriving factors to represent uncertainty. Attention is also drawn to new developments in controlling conversations with client users which greatly help "user friendliness". Some criticisms are made of the present systems and some comparisons made between shells and the language Prolog.
