Abstract
In the past it would have been faintly ridiculous to treat pipelines with the same precision as highways - owing to the high costs of survey and manual design.

Recent advances in electronic surveying instruments and hand-held computers have led to the development of the 'Co-ordinated Method' of pipeline work - which is increasingly being used.
