Abstract
The mathematical development of various discrete element methods (DEMs) for analyzing systems of general shaped rigid or flexible bodies is described. A number of examples are then presented to illustrate the applicability of these techniques in engineering analysis. These examples include: i) flow of particulate media in a rotating drum, ii) uniaxial compaction of different particulate materials, and iii) pseudo-static fracture of an elastic brittle disk in indirect tension.
