Abstract
The paper describes a number of macros written within the Microsoft® Excel spreadsheet package to assist with the processing of data from laboratory and filed tests. The macros have been written using the Visual Basic Applications (VBA) language. Three macros are described in the paper: Tangent - for calculating tangent slope values where noise in the data can result in large errors in slope; Scatter to Bar - for plotting data on an X-Y scatter plot in the form of a bar chart; Timelines - for displaying two dimensional data profiles which vary with a third axis (such as time) and providing the ability to scroll through the data set. Examples of the use of each macro are presented. The functionality of VBA as included in Microsoft® Excel 97 is utilised in the development of the macros. These include features such as User forms and Command Bars which are new features in Excel 97. The ways in which Excel chart data can be manipulated is also described.
