Abstract
This paper reports an application of the artificial neural network for accurate forecast of ocean wave heights. The back-propagation procedure for minimizing the error of the desired output is used in the learning process of the neural network. This paper presents the wave forecast of a site based on the observed wave data of the other sites. The field wave data measured in three local sites at Taichung Harbor of Taiwan were used to test the performance of the neural network model. Results show that the neural network model performs well for the wave forecast when short-term wave data are used as a training set. It is also found that the wave forecast of a local site has a better performance when wave data of multi-site observations are used.
