Abstract
A World Wide Web based crane calculator and information system has been developed at UMIST's Computer Integrated Construction Group. The information is derived from a variety of commercial sources and from experts in the field. The work is targeted at meeting the information needs of structural designers rather than the specialist lift designer or contractor. The paper discusses how the information needs of the structural designer have changed in recent years. The Crane Information System is proposed as a model for delivery of appropriate specialist knowledge at the right level of detail during the structural design phase of a project.
