Abstract
The plastic design of tall, plane, steel sway frames is difficult because stability becomes an important factor in the design. The problems that must be overcome are described in this paper. A proposal for overcoming one of these problems, namely the determination of the internal load distribution that should be used to check the out-of-plane stability of the columns of the frame is discussed in detail, and proposals that have been made for overcoming the other problems are summarised. All these proposals can be incorporated into a relatively simple design procedure for such frames.
