Abstract
This paper presents a load balancing algorithm that can be used for a wide range of parallel finite element applications based on domain decomposition. It is a versatile algorithm in the sense that it works on all types of parallel computers, including non-dedicated, heterogeneous, computers. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated for a finite element simulation that was run both on a Cray T3E and on a non-dedicated, heterogeneous, workstation cluster.
