Abstract
A second order approximation method is presented for optimum design of three dimensional structures. The main idea is to reduce the number of required finite element structural analyses in the design process. The individual stresses are approximated in terms of the specified design variables. To avoid the analytical evaluation of the Hessian matrix which is expensive to evaluate, an approximate Hessian matrix is generated. The approach is applied to some three dimensional continuum structures and the numerical results are compared with published work.
