Abstract
In America, bridge inspection has been required by the federal government for almost 25 years. Unfortunately, most of the prescribed data items are not useful for making decisions about the best types of design/construction for bridges, the rehabilitation or replacement of existing bridges, and bridge life cycle costs. This paper briefly describes some of the innovations made possible by new information technology applications to bridge management. The Alabama Bridge Information Management System is used as a case study for these applications.
