Abstract
Even if the seed of a major engineering innovation is always the fruit of one mind, the cultivation of a climate conducive to creative work often requires a managed team approach, and the development of an idea to a prototype stage invariably needs an enlarged support group. The technical process of innovation is therefore sensitive to management styles, and these in turn are related to technical education and organisational culture. To sell the developed product in the market requires an alliance with other professions, with an implied awareness .that peripheral issues to the technology may dominate the chances of commercial success. This paper examines the nature of innovation in organisations in this context. It looks at the way organisations themselves change and how this may affect the innovator.
