Abstract
The paper presents a method of generating equilibrium moment fields for flat plates and flat slabs. Column and middle strips break the slab into panels in which fractions of the loading which sum to unity are assigned to be carried on Hillerborg strips in the orthogonal directions defined by the column layout. Shears at the boundaries of the panels are directly transmitted as downward reactions on adjacent panels A distributed upward loading required to equilibrate these shears and the- associated bending moment diagram is calculated. Total downward loading on the panel is satisfied by carrying the equilibrant of the upward loading as well as the design loading in the orthogonal direction. In order to transmit the strip reactions to the columns a novel application of strong bands in the form of crossed balanced cantilever bands is used. Finally the edge case is treated and by extension, the same device could be applied at a corner.
