Abstract
Intensive damage to adjacent buildings during several major earthquakes due to the "pounding effect" has entailed a drastic increase in the gaps of expansion joints required by recent seismic codes; these gaps are often in conflict with architectural needs.

This paper describes a solution intended to reduce significantly the pounding effect by limiting the relative seismic displacements of adjacent buildings and, consequently, the amount of potential energy. Thus, exaggerated gaps could be avoided.
