Abstract
This paper discusses the influence of slightly disordered geometric characteristics or static loading on the dynamics and stability of lightly coupled periodic structural systems of geometrically nonlinear behavior and linear elastic materials. A Lagrangian formulation, suitable to general FE modeling, is applied to a nonlinear Bernoulli-Euler beam element. The ANDROS FEM program, developed by the first author, is successfully used in several nonlinear analyses of lightly coupled periodic continuous beams to consider the effect that these small disorders may have upon their free vibration and buckling modes. It is shown that the tangent stiffness matrix of the incremental formulation should be used in the resultant eingenvalue problem. Both axial and transversal forces seem to have strong influence. It is suggested that the localization phenomenon may be used for passive structural control.
