Abstract
The paper describes the development of a Decision Support Tool for the conceptual design of river bridges. The work builds on the authors' previous system incorporating heuristic substitution. It is shown how knowledge acquisition is used to identify a suitable area of application. The importance of understanding the requirements of the user in terms of an effective system interface as well other current areas in the development of such systems are discussed.
