Abstract
Current literature and case examples from engineering indicate that access to existing information can be a limiting factor in civil engineering practice. Improvements in data communications, particularly as brought about by the World Wide Web, can greatly enhance the accessibility of information while maintaining integrity and security of a stored database. This paper reviews current data access implementations on the World Wide Web and summarises their features. The desirable and essential features of a Web-based, data search and retrieval system for the distribution of engineering data are identified and a small-scale test system is described. The system uses water flow data commonly required by Canadian engineers.
