Abstract
The retrieval mechanism in a Case Based Reasoning system ensures that the relevant cases are retrieved for the given problem. This paper briefly discusses some of the conventional approaches to retrieval. An unconventional retrieval mechanism is presented which involves learning retrieval strategies using examples of retrieval. The training examples or retrieval cases, enable the case based design system to adapt its retrieval procedures from experiences gathered from design sessions. The data structures required for representing retrieval examples are presented in the paper. A description of the prototype system called CADREM, is also given in the paper. CADREM is a case-based design system for the conceptual structural design of buildings. Illustrations from CADREM bring out the advantages of the new approach to retrieval.
