Abstract
This paper describes a continuing investigation of Genetic Algorithms (GA) in the development of a decision-support system for conceptual structural building design. Background to building design is presented. GAs are applied to the initial design processes for structural grid planning and floor type selection. The problem representation, results and implications are presented. Issues relevant to the application of such a tool in an engineering environment for promoting integrated design are discussed together with the direction of future work.
