Abstract
The paper presents an analysis of the nonlinear response of single mitred bends. The analysis is based on a nonlinear finite element formulation that employs a 9-noded Lagrange degenerate shell element, in addition to a customized 11-noded transition element. Elastic response of a mitred bend subjected to internal pressure was compared to existing analytical and experimental results. In addition, a nonlinear analysis of a similar bend is performed. Based on the numerical study, the collapse load and the corresponding load-deformation patterns are presented and discussed.
