Abstract
The GOOD_B (Generic Object-Oriented detailed Design of Buildings) system and the generic model for detailed structural design is presented. The model is developed at a high level of abstraction and is applicable to the design of any type of structure. The classes and their relationships involved in structural design are identified by the model. The detailed structural design process is represented as methods belonging to the classes. The representation and utilisation of heuristic and practical knowledge through the object-oriented approach is discussed and illustrated. Three examples are presented which illustrate the capabilities of the system with respect to the advantageous use of different types of design knowledge, the applicability of the model to buildings of different material types, and the ease of extending the system to accommodate the different material types.
