Abstract
A contact element allowing the analysis by the Finite Element Method of problems such as the planes of weakness in a rock mass, in construction joints of concrete dams, or in the interface between soil and structures, is presented. The model includes nonlinear behaviour of the joint, with a plasticity law to simulate dilatancy, joint closure or failure by tensile stresses and shear resistance due to friction between the rough surfaces of the joint. The method is implemented into a finite element code and can be applied in practical examples such as the determination of contact normal and tangential stresses between the two faces of a fault, the stability of a rockfill gravity dam with joints between the core and the rockfill slopes.
