Abstract
This paper addresses the problem of the shape optimization of the shell structures, the optimization being focused on determination of the shell thickness and identification of locations of the reinforcement stiffeners. The applied optimization procedure involves both, optimization of the shell thickness first, and determination of proper location of the reinforcement stiffeners afterwards, and is a two-stage process by its nature. The Discretized Optimality Criteria method is used as an optimization algorithm in the first stage, while the second stage of optimization is an interactive one. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed technique.
