Abstract
This paper describes some analysis and computer aided design behavioral studies performed on a variety of more conventional cable supported roof structures under resultant uplift conditions. In particular it considers the situation that a limited number of members can be adaptive in response to the applied external loading. It is suggested that the overall efficiency of the roof is improved at least from serviceability criteria. A cable stayed overhead support system is generally designed to resist downward loads effectively when there is little variability in the distribution of loads. However, in tropical regions, efficient lightweight roof systems often need to be designed to resist uplift. Normal overhead cable support systems tend to go slack and large deflections are possible. A discussion of some options is presented to effectively oppose these effects is given which includes the concept of adaptable components capable of changing their length in response to the loadings.
