Abstract
In this paper, R.C. continuous beams are analysed using a developed computer program based on the stiffness method. The program takes into consideration the effect of beam cracking at each beam segment. Both the incremental and iterative techniques are employed in the program. The program can handle beams with rectangular and T sections with the corresponding tension and compression steel reinforcement. Three continuous beams with different span ratios and steel reinforcement areas are studied. The results of the analysis show that moment redistribution may significantly affect the value of the mid-span sagging moments when considering the effect of beam cracking. The resulting deflection of the beams is affected significantly. In general, the maximum deflections obtained using the ACI effective moment of inertia lies between the values computed from the incremental and iterative procedures.
