Abstract
A concept for a two-axle vehicle with a focus on simplicity and cost-effectiveness is proposed as a future generation regional rail vehicle. The proposed vehicle is equipped with a novel asymmetric running gear configuration with active suspension to alleviate the issue of poor curving performance and ride comfort commonly found in two-axle vehicles. This study describes the proposed running gear configuration and the modelling and simulation of the active wheelset steering designed to improve the vehicle's curving performance. The active wheelset steering is designed around a feedback control loop for the two actuators fitted on the vehicle with a focus on having a simple, cost-effective system. A control strategy based on radial wheelset position and actuator length was chosen. The simulation results demonstrate an improved curving performance and confirm the effectiveness of the active wheelset steering.
