Summary
The reconstruction of a particular tramway line in Ghent is related to the crossing of the River Lys by the historic St George Bridge, because it has a sharp vertical curve. Various alignments for the tracks are being considered and the load carrying capacity of the bridge is being assessed by using a numerical model, including the corrosion damage to the steel structure. Some unusual characteristics of the structure are found and only minor refurbishment will be needed for the structure to be fully functioning.
