Summary
ERTMS is the European standard solution for train management ensuring the interoperability among different national signaling systems and its evolution roadmap has already foreseen the adoption of EGNOS and GALILEO to become more competitive. ERSAT (ERtms over SATellite) is a technological platform conceived by RFI in the 2012 for verifying and testing the suitability of satellite technology within the ERTMS ecosystem and to contribute to the future standardization process. The building blocks of ERSAT are the 3InSat project of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the ERSAT EAV project of the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA). A test bed located in Sardinia on a 50km line between Cagliari and Oristano has been deployed to verify the performance of the new telecom system based on public networks (cellular, satellite) and the satellite localization system compatible with the ERTMS. This test bed is representative of the application scenarios where ERTMS is supposed to operate: urban areas, where satellite visibility might be difficult, rural regions with open sky visibility and locations with tunnels and bridges. This paper presents the user requirements harmonized with DB Netz, the results achieved during the testing programme and the roadmap for the certification activity with the Italian safety Agency.
