Summary
The Norwegian National Rail Administration wishes to increase the speed along the existing railway network. Railway catenary systems on several lines were designed for lower speeds and further research is needed to reveal the effects of increased speed. Field measurements are necessary to achieve this by validating numerical models and studying the actual behaviour of the system. Close range photogrammetry is a methodology to measure position and displacement of objects and is used in a wide range of applications. The method is attractive for measurement of the railway catenary system because it is non-contact and therefore it does not interfere with the dynamic properties of the system and non-intrusive to traffic conditions at the site. This paper describes the use of this method to measure the response of railway catenary system. The paper shows some areas of application and highlights some challenges associated with the methodology.
