Summary
This paper shows a method to calculate a tunnel specific shock spectrum in order to account for the dynamic amplification effects of impulsive loads due to train entrance and train passing through a tunnel. In this study the calculation of the shock spectrum for two different railway tunnels in Austria is presented. In addition a method for fatigue design of structures in tunnels is presented. To calculate the shock spectrum of the simulation results of the aerodynamic loading due to a train passing, TSI design trains were considered. The Duhamel envelop integral was solved for arbitrary loading and varying the natural frequency of the analysed structure in the tunnel over the range of interest. The method presented for the calculation of tunnel specific shock spectrums can be applied to any arbitrary time history of pressure loads that results from simulations of train passing. By use of the method presented, the dynamic amplification due to the high impulsive pressure loads during train entrance and crossing is correctly considered and the design loads are evaluated in the correct way.
