Summary
This paper presents an approach for monitoring the instantaneous energy consumed by diesel trains in their daily routes. For this purpose, a diesel multiple unit was equipped with fuel metering devices, thus providing values of net fuel flow at an interval of 1 second. Other variables influencing the fuel consumption, such as the traveling speed, the train position and the engine revolutions were also monitored with the same sampling period. The dataset thus collected will be used for the calibration and validation of future train energy consumption models.
