Abstract
The paper deals with the minimum weight design of steel frames. Considering the AISC specifications for stress and slenderness constraints, it suggests an iterative algorithm which does not require a formal method of optimization and which uses the theorems of structural variation to avoid structural reanalysis. A flowchart of the computer program which highlights the main features of the algorithm is given. As an illustrative example, the optimum design of a portal frame is considered. The result is compared with available results in the literature.
