Summary
This paper was written with the understanding that a simple and brief theoretical three-dimensional structural dynamic analysis should be given, as practical guidance to fill the gap that many young practicing engineers have in their knowledge. Backward analysis by using mode shapes computed using the most common commercial programs in Indonesia for building design and analysis verified that in the case of an irregular asymmetrical building which has multi masses and several numbers of rigid floor diaphragms - "a typical mixed-used building analytical model where several towers are interconnected by substantially large masses of lower stories podium and basements" that the influence of higher modes on the vertical distribution of the lateral torsional moments (torques) needs prudent refinement. For certain restricted and limited structural lateral stiffness conditions perhaps the ASCE 7-10 provides appropriate guidance to eliminate these difficulties and simplifies the problem for the structural analysis of the building.
