Summary
In this paper, a new mathematic model of location optimization for viscous dampers is established through energy analysis based on the force analogy method. Firstly, the basic principle of the force analogy method is introduced. Then the paper deals with the optimal placement of viscous dampers and step-by-step time history analyses are carried out, using MATLAB programming. Numerical analysis is illustrated to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the new mathematical model for structural control. A steel building and three ground motions are considered in this study. The optimal placement method using the force analogy method can confirm the dampers' locations all at once and be exact for each span. Finally, a few helpful conclusions on the optimal placement of viscous dampers are made.
