Abstract
The paper discusses the likely influence of internal air stiffening, added mass and air momentum effects on the response of large air-supported structures to gust loading. Two conceptually simple numerical approaches to the inclusion of these effects by the use of air elements and control volumes are described. The first of these is applied in a trial structure subject to suddenly applied patch loading. Convergence of the method, in terms of the very large number of elements required, is found to be extremely slow. The second approach, which should account more realistically for the convected acceleration terms of the moving fluid, has yet to be tested for convergence.
