Abstract
The objective in formulating this work was to gain a better knowledge of the construction industry in general, and to understand if there was a problem of lack of construction knowledge during the design stage. If this was so, to promote awareness among designers of the costs and other implications, of their designs upon the construction process, and to highlight the significant aspects of design. All of this would help in bringing design and construction together and therefore enable contractors to provide the client with even better value for money.

This paper addresses the detail design stage of the design process, as detail design decisions have a significant impact on cost and time. It focuses on integrating construction expertise with the design process at the detail design phase and explores both the designer's and the constructor's viewpoints.
