Abstract
In this paper, parametric control approach is used for the seismic response suppression of a single story damped structure subjected to El Centro earthquake. It is assumed that the stiffness and the damping parameters can be changed independently from each other. Optimal active control is also considered for comparison. The control policy for the parametric control case is developed by minimizing the total mechanical energy of the main structure. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method, behaviour of a single story damped structure under both optimal active and parametric control is investigated for El Centro earthquake. It is shown that both parametric control and the optimal active control systems can be used effectively to reduce the earthquake induced structural vibrations.
