Abstract
Design objects of an integrated structural engineering facility need to communicate data and information among each other. The major ingredients of a Communication Model for design objects include channels, mediums and protocols. This paper identifies major communication channels among design objects, suggests certain communication mediums for carrying message arguments and response items through the identified communication channels, and defines several communication protocols for object-to-object communication. The paper will also show how the channels, mediums and protocols defined can help in handling complex queries among objects, supporting the conflicting needs of design objects, facilitating the communication of data and information among design objects and enhancing the design of objects of an integrated software for structural engineering applications.
